Germany Weighs Financial Incentives for Voluntary Return of Syrian Refugees
(MENAFN) German authorities are reportedly examining a proposal to encourage Syrian refugees to return to their home country by offering financial assistance of up to €8,000 (about $9,300), according to reports citing government sources.
The idea, discussed within the Interior Ministry, is being considered amid rising political pressure over migration policy and growing support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has placed immigration at the center of its platform.
Germany became one of the primary destinations for Syrians fleeing the civil war during the 2014–2015 refugee crisis, following the adoption of an open-border approach under then-Chancellor Angela Merkel. Since then, the country has hosted a large Syrian population, with more than 951,000 Syrians residing in Germany as of August 2025, according to official figures cited in reports.
Of this group, over half reportedly hold temporary residency linked to refugee protection status, while voluntary returns to Syria have remained limited.
Under current arrangements, individuals who choose to return voluntarily typically receive support payments averaging around €1,000. The new proposal would significantly increase that amount in an effort to reduce long-term public expenditure on housing and welfare support.
Some regional officials have argued that higher upfront payments could be economically justified if they reduce long-term costs to the state. They suggest that even payouts in the higher four-figure or low five-figure range could still be less expensive than extended public support for asylum seekers remaining in Germany.
At present, German authorities are reportedly rejecting the vast majority of new asylum claims from Syrian applicants, with approval rates falling sharply in recent months.
Political leaders have also projected that a substantial portion of Syrians living in Germany could eventually return over the coming years, although such estimates have been disputed or clarified in subsequent statements.
